Evidence supporting the use of: Achyranthes
For the health condition: Prolapsed Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes (commonly Achyranthes aspera, also known as "prickly chaff flower") has a long-standing use in various traditional medical systems, particularly Ayurveda and Unani, for supporting uterine health and treating gynecological conditions, including prolapsed uterus. Historical Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys note that root or whole-plant preparations are used as a part of herbal formulations, often as a decoction or powder, purportedly to "tone" the pelvic and uterine muscles and help in conditions like uterine prolapse and vaginal laxity. The rationale is based on the plant’s reputed astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, aiming to provide symptomatic relief or enhance tissue strength.
However, scientific studies directly investigating Achyranthes for prolapsed uterus are extremely limited or lacking. Most available research focuses on general pharmacological properties—such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or uterotonic activities—often in vitro or in animal models, not in the context of uterine prolapse. As such, while traditional use is well-documented, there is insufficient clinical or experimental evidence to strongly support its efficacy for this specific condition. Therefore, its use is primarily tradition-based, with a low level of supporting evidence (rated 2/5) due to the absence of robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies specifically addressing prolapsed uterus.
