Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes bidentata, known as "Niu Xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various gynecological disorders, including the management of prolapsed uterus. In TCM, the plant is believed to "invigorate blood," "tonify the liver and kidneys," and "guide blood downward," which aligns with the traditional conceptual framework for treating uterine prolapse—a condition thought to result from deficiency and sinking of qi and blood. Classical texts and materia medica, such as the “Shennong Bencao Jing” and “Compendium of Materia Medica,” recommend Achyranthes bidentata for prolapse of the uterus and rectum, often in combination with other herbs.

However, while its use is well-documented in traditional practice, there is limited scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for prolapsed uterus. Some modern pharmacological studies suggest that Achyranthes bidentata may affect connective tissue metabolism, hormone regulation, and blood circulation, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes in uterine prolapse. No high-quality clinical trials have validated its use for this condition in humans. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with scientific validation still lacking.
