Evidence supporting the use of: Omega Blend
For the body system: Prostaglandins
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Omega Blend typically contains a mixture of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, such as those derived from fish oil, flaxseed oil, or evening primrose oil. The connection between these essential fatty acids and prostaglandin production is well-established in scientific literature. Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that play crucial roles in inflammation, immune function, and various physiological processes. They are synthesized in the body from fatty acid precursors, notably arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid).
Scientific studies have demonstrated that dietary intake of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can alter the balance and types of prostaglandins produced. For example, omega-3 fatty acids tend to result in prostaglandins that are less inflammatory compared to those derived from omega-6 fatty acids. This modulation of prostaglandin synthesis is why omega supplements are sometimes recommended to support healthy inflammatory responses.
However, while these mechanisms are well-understood biochemically, clinical evidence supporting the routine use of omega blends specifically for direct "prostaglandin system support" is moderate. Most clinical research focuses instead on related health outcomes—such as cardiovascular health, inflammation, and joint health—rather than direct measurement of prostaglandin levels or function. Thus, while the use is scientifically grounded, the direct evidence for prostaglandin system modulation as a clinical endpoint is limited.
