Evidence supporting the use of: 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR)

Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
7-Hydroxymatairesinol (HMR) is a plant lignan predominantly found in the knots of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Upon ingestion, HMR is converted in the human body into enterolignans such as enterolactone and enterodiol, compounds that can exert weak estrogen-like effects. The rationale for using HMR in support of prostate health is largely based on its phytoestrogenic properties and its studied influence on hormone-related pathways that are implicated in prostate health and disease.
Preclinical studies have shown that HMR and its metabolites may modulate steroid hormone metabolism, inhibit cell proliferation, and alter the expression of genes related to prostate cancer. For example, in vitro and animal research suggests that HMR can reduce testosterone-induced prostate growth and may exhibit anti-carcinogenic effects via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. However, clinical studies in humans are very limited. One small pilot study indicated that HMR supplementation could increase enterolactone levels, but did not directly assess prostate outcomes. There is insufficient robust clinical evidence demonstrating that HMR supplementation has a significant or consistent benefit for prostate health or prostate disease prevention in humans.
In summary, while the use of HMR for prostate support is based on plausible biological mechanisms and some promising preclinical data, the lack of substantial human clinical trials means the evidence is preliminary. Therefore, the scientific support for its use in prostate health is modest at present.
