Alanine, specifically in the form of beta-alanine or L-alanine, has some scientific support for its use in supporting prostate health, particularly in the context of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Research has investigated the effects of a combination of amino acids—most commonly alanine, glycine, and glutamic acid—on symptoms of BPH. Several clinical studies from the 1980s and 1990s reported that this combination could help reduce symptoms such as urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia in men with BPH. The proposed mechanism involves these amino acids reducing the swelling of the prostate tissue or modulating the activity of certain prostate enzymes. However, while alanine has been studied in these contexts, it is rarely used alone and more often as part of a blend. The quality of the evidence is moderate, with some older randomized controlled trials and few recent studies. There is also insufficient data to support its use in other prostate-related conditions or as a standalone therapy. Current medical guidelines do not routinely recommend alanine for prostate health, and more rigorous, recent research is needed to clarify its effectiveness and safety. Thus, alanine’s use for supporting the prostate is somewhat supported by scientific literature, but the evidence is not strong or conclusive.
