Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Daidzein is an isoflavone found predominantly in soybeans and other legumes. Its use in supporting the prostate body system is based on its phytoestrogenic properties, which can influence hormone-related pathways. Several epidemiological studies have observed lower prostate cancer rates in populations with high dietary intake of soy isoflavones, including daidzein. Laboratory research has demonstrated that daidzein may exert anti-androgenic effects, inhibit cell proliferation, and induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cell lines. Some animal studies have shown protective effects against prostate hyperplasia and cancer development.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited and mixed. A few small randomized controlled trials have investigated soy isoflavones for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer, with some suggesting minor improvements in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and urinary symptoms, while others report no significant effects. The mechanisms are not fully elucidated, and daidzein’s bioavailability and metabolism can vary widely among individuals. While there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting daidzein’s role in prostate health, the overall quality and consistency of evidence remain modest. Thus, daidzein’s use for prostate support is based on emerging but not yet robust scientific validation, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
