Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ellagic acid is a polyphenol found in various fruits and vegetables, notably pomegranates, raspberries, and walnuts. Its use to support prostate health is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence, although much of the data comes from in vitro (test tube) and animal studies rather than large-scale human clinical trials. Laboratory research has demonstrated that ellagic acid possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help protect prostate cells from oxidative stress and inflammation—both factors implicated in prostate disorders, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer.

Some animal studies and cell culture experiments suggest that ellagic acid may inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells and reduce tumor proliferation. For example, studies have shown that ellagic acid can induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in prostate cancer cell lines and may modulate signaling pathways involved in cancer progression. Limited small-scale human studies have indicated that diets rich in ellagic acid (such as those high in pomegranate juice) might have favorable effects on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, but the evidence is not robust enough to warrant strong clinical recommendations.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting ellagic acid’s role in prostate health, the current level of evidence is modest and largely preclinical. More rigorous human clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this use.
