Evidence supporting the use of: Epimedium
For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Epimedium, also known as horny goat weed, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various health benefits, including male vitality and sexual health, which sometimes extends to claims about supporting prostate health. However, the traditional use of Epimedium is more focused on enhancing libido and treating erectile dysfunction rather than directly addressing prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate inflammation. There is limited direct traditional documentation specifically linking Epimedium to prostate health, but its overall use in men’s health and “kidney yang” tonification is sometimes interpreted more broadly as supporting the male reproductive system.
From a scientific perspective, research on Epimedium has primarily focused on its active compounds, such as icariin, and their effects on sexual function and hormonal modulation. Few studies have specifically investigated its impact on the prostate. There is currently a lack of strong scientific evidence from human clinical trials supporting the use of Epimedium for direct prostate health benefits. Most claims in this area rely on its traditional association with male health, rather than direct prostate support. Therefore, while Epimedium is sometimes included in prostate support supplements, this use is based more on traditional beliefs than on robust scientific validation.
