Flax lignans, particularly secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), are phytoestrogens found in flaxseed. These compounds have been investigated for their potential benefits on prostate health, especially regarding benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer risk. Several animal studies and a limited number of small human trials suggest that flax lignans may help modulate hormone metabolism, reduce inflammation, and exert anti-proliferative effects on prostate tissue. Some clinical studies have reported that flaxseed supplementation can reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and slow the rate of prostate cancer cell proliferation in men scheduled for prostatectomy. These effects are thought to be due to lignans' ability to influence androgen and estrogen pathways and their antioxidant properties. However, the clinical evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in study design. There is a lack of large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials to firmly establish efficacy. Nonetheless, the existing studies provide preliminary scientific support for the use of flax lignans in supporting prostate health.
