Evidence supporting the use of: Flower Pollen
For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Flower pollen extract, particularly from rye grass (Secale cereale), has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting prostate health, especially in relation to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and associated urinary symptoms. Several clinical trials, mostly conducted in Europe and Japan, have evaluated the efficacy of standardized flower pollen extracts (such as Cernilton®) in men with BPH. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews suggest that pollen extracts may moderately improve urinary symptoms, reduce nocturia, and increase peak urinary flow compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects, smooth muscle relaxation, and inhibition of prostate cell proliferation.
However, while some studies show statistically significant improvements, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate, with many trials being small, short-term, or lacking rigorous blinding and randomization. The European Association of Urology lists pollen extract as a phytotherapeutic option with limited but positive evidence for symptom relief in BPH. There is less evidence for its use in preventing prostate cancer or treating other prostate conditions.
In summary, flower pollen extract is justified for prostate support based on scientific evidence, though this evidence is moderate in strength and primarily relates to symptom management in BPH rather than broader prostate health.
