Evidence supporting the use of: HMR lignan
For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
HMR lignan (hydroxymatairesinol) is a type of plant lignan primarily found in the Norway spruce. It is metabolized in the human body into enterolactone, a phytoestrogen compound. The interest in HMR lignan for prostate health arises from research suggesting that lignans in general may exert a weak estrogenic effect and may influence hormone metabolism. Some epidemiological and preclinical studies have linked higher dietary intake of lignans with a potential reduction in the risk of prostate cancer or improvement in markers of prostate health. However, most of this evidence is indirect, focusing on dietary lignans as a category rather than HMR lignan specifically. Randomized controlled trials in humans directly testing HMR lignan supplementation for prostate health are limited and have produced mixed results. Some small studies have reported favorable changes in hormone-related biomarkers, but clear clinical outcomes—such as reduced incidence or progression of prostate disease—have not been robustly demonstrated. Overall, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some supportive data from animal and observational studies, definitive scientific validation in humans is lacking. Thus, the evidence for using HMR lignan to support the prostate body system can be considered preliminary and moderate at best.
