For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hygrophila (Hygrophila auriculata), known as "Kokilaksha" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine for various urinary and reproductive health concerns, including prostate support. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe its use as a diuretic, aphrodisiac, and tonic for the genitourinary system, often prescribed in formulations for conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary retention, and general urinary tract health. The traditional rationale is based on its perceived ability to reduce inflammation and support healthy urine flow, which are relevant to prostate function in aging men.
However, scientific validation of these effects is limited. Some animal studies indicate anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties, but direct clinical studies evaluating its efficacy for prostate health in humans are scarce. Most available evidence is anecdotal or derived from traditional formulations rather than rigorously controlled trials. As such, while its use for prostate support is well-established in traditional medicine, it is not yet substantiated by robust modern clinical research. The evidence rating reflects the strong traditional use but the current lack of high-quality scientific validation.
