Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nigella seed (Nigella sativa), also known as black seed or black cumin, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Historically, it has been employed as a general health tonic and for various ailments, including urinary and reproductive health issues. Some traditional practitioners have recommended Nigella seed for supporting prostate health, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are believed to help with urinary flow and general prostate function in traditional herbal theories.

However, regarding direct scientific evidence for its use specifically for prostate support, particularly for conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer, robust clinical trial data are lacking. A few animal studies suggest that Nigella sativa and its active compound thymoquinone may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even anti-tumor effects, but these findings have not been directly translated into clear human clinical outcomes for prostate health. Thus, while Nigella seed is traditionally used for general male reproductive and urinary health, there is insufficient scientific evidence to firmly validate its use specifically for supporting the prostate.
