Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as watercress, broccoli, and cabbage. Its use in support of prostate health is primarily based on preclinical scientific research rather than traditional medicine. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that PEITC can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells, induce apoptosis (programmed cell death), and modulate enzymes involved in carcinogen metabolism. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that PEITC suppresses androgen receptor signaling, a key driver in the development and progression of prostate cancer. In animal models, dietary PEITC has been observed to reduce tumor incidence and slow tumor growth.

However, while these findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans is limited. There are a few small clinical studies investigating the effects of PEITC on biomarkers associated with cancer risk, but there is insufficient data to confirm its efficacy for prostate health in humans. As a result, PEITC is considered to have scientific rationale and preclinical support for prostate health, but lacks robust clinical validation. More well-designed human trials are needed to determine its true effectiveness and safety for supporting the prostate body system.
