Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pumpkin seed oil has been traditionally used in some cultures to support prostate health, but there is also a modest body of scientific research evaluating its effects, particularly on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men characterized by prostate enlargement. Some clinical studies have shown that pumpkin seed oil may improve symptoms of BPH. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the journal Urologia Internationalis (2009) found that pumpkin seed oil significantly reduced symptoms of BPH compared to placebo over a period of 12 months. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase (an enzyme involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which can contribute to prostate enlargement) and anti-inflammatory effects.

However, while these findings are promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain limited. Most studies involve small sample sizes and potential biases. Major medical organizations do not currently endorse pumpkin seed oil as a primary treatment for prostate issues. In summary, scientific evidence provides some support for the use of pumpkin seed oil for prostate health, particularly for symptom relief in BPH, but more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
