Rating (out of 5): 3
Stigmasterol is a plant sterol (phytosterol) that is structurally similar to cholesterol. It has been studied for its potential effects on the prostate, particularly in the context of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The use of plant sterols, including stigmasterol, for prostate health is partly based on the fact that another phytosterol, beta-sitosterol, has shown some efficacy in clinical trials for improving urinary symptoms associated with BPH. Stigmasterol is often found alongside beta-sitosterol in plant extracts used in prostate supplements, such as those derived from saw palmetto or African star grass (Hypoxis rooperi). However, the primary clinical evidence for prostate support relates to beta-sitosterol, not stigmasterol specifically. Some studies suggest that mixtures of phytosterols, which include stigmasterol, may modestly improve urinary symptoms and flow measures in men with BPH, but the direct effect of stigmasterol on the prostate is less well-studied. Reviews and meta-analyses highlight that while phytosterol mixtures can be somewhat beneficial, the evidence for stigmasterol alone is limited. In summary, the use of stigmasterol for prostate support is scientifically plausible and is supported by some indirect evidence from studies of phytosterol mixtures. However, direct clinical validation for stigmasterol specifically is lacking, and its role is generally inferred from broader studies on plant sterols.
