Evidence supporting the use of: Chicken Gizzard
For the health condition: Protein Digestion (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chicken gizzard has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia and parts of Africa, as a remedy for digestive issues, including poor protein digestion. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dried and powdered chicken gizzard lining (known as "Ji Nei Jin") is commonly used to help strengthen digestive function and alleviate symptoms like indigestion, bloating, and poor appetite. The rationale is that the gizzard, being the organ responsible for grinding food in birds, contains enzymes and tough muscular tissue that might aid human digestion when consumed. However, there is minimal scientific research directly supporting these traditional claims. While chicken gizzard is high in protein and certain digestive enzymes, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating its effectiveness in treating or supporting protein digestion in humans. Most modern medical literature does not recognize chicken gizzard as a validated therapy for protein digestion issues. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by cultural tradition rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence remains low.
