Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Almond oil has been traditionally used in various cultures for its emollient and soothing properties on the skin, including in the context of dry, itchy, or inflamed conditions such as psoriasis. Historical records and traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda often recommend almond oil for improving skin texture, reducing dryness, and calming irritation. The principal rationale is that almond oil is rich in fatty acids (notably oleic and linoleic acid), vitamin E, and other nutrients that help moisturize and protect the skin barrier, which is often compromised in psoriasis.

However, scientific validation for almond oil specifically treating or significantly improving psoriasis is limited. While some small studies and expert reviews acknowledge that plant oils, in general, can help moisturize and reduce scaling or itchiness in psoriatic skin, direct clinical trials on almond oil for psoriasis are lacking. Most available data are extrapolated from its general moisturizing effect and anecdotal use. Thus, while almond oil is widely used as a supportive topical agent for symptom relief in psoriasis, this practice is based more on tradition and general skin care benefits than on robust scientific evidence targeting psoriasis specifically.
