Baicalein is a flavonoid compound found in the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its use for psoriasis is primarily supported by preliminary scientific evidence, mostly from in vitro and animal studies. Baicalein has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, which are relevant to the pathogenesis of psoriasis—a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and immune cell infiltration.

Several studies have reported that baicalein can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17, all of which play key roles in the development and exacerbation of psoriatic lesions. For example, animal models of psoriasis-like skin inflammation have shown that topical or systemic baicalein can reduce skin thickness, scaling, and erythema, and decrease inflammatory markers. Mechanistically, baicalein appears to suppress the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, both central to inflammation and immune responses in psoriasis.

However, there are currently no large-scale human clinical trials directly investigating baicalein as a treatment for psoriasis. Most evidence comes from preclinical research, and its efficacy and safety in humans remain to be determined. Thus, while scientific rationale and early studies exist, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are still limited.
