Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) has been used in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda for a variety of conditions, including skin disorders. In Ayurvedic texts, extracts and pastes made from the bark, aerial roots, or leaves of the banyan tree have been recommended for their purported wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which may extend to skin diseases like psoriasis. However, the use of banyan specifically for psoriasis is primarily based on traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports, rather than robust clinical evidence.

Scientific studies on banyan's effectiveness for psoriasis are extremely limited. Some laboratory research has shown that extracts of Ficus benghalensis possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically provide benefit in inflammatory skin conditions. Yet, no high-quality clinical trials have directly evaluated its efficacy or safety in people with psoriasis. Thus, while traditional use exists, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its use for psoriasis remains minimal.
