Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium (various species) has some preliminary scientific evidence supporting its use in the context of psoriasis, but the evidence is still limited and primarily based on small clinical studies and preclinical research. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, and recent research has implicated the gut-skin axis—whereby gut microbiota influences skin health—suggesting that alterations in the gut microbiome may contribute to psoriasis pathogenesis.

Several studies have reported that individuals with psoriasis often have reduced levels of beneficial gut bacteria, including Bifidobacterium species. Small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have examined whether oral administration of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics can improve psoriasis symptoms. For example, a randomized controlled trial (2013) using a multi-strain probiotic (including Bifidobacterium) found improvement in PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) scores compared to placebo. Animal studies have suggested that Bifidobacterium supplementation can reduce systemic inflammation and modulate immune responses relevant to psoriasis.

Despite these encouraging findings, the number of high-quality human studies is small, and many trials use probiotic mixtures rather than Bifidobacterium alone, making it difficult to isolate the specific effects of Bifidobacterium. Systematic reviews generally regard the evidence as promising but insufficient for firm clinical recommendations. Thus, current support for Bifidobacterium in psoriasis is based on emerging scientific evidence, but more rigorous, large-scale studies are needed to confirm efficacy and establish clinical guidelines.
