Evidence supporting the use of: Boswellic Acid
For the health condition: Psoriasis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boswellic acid, a major active component of the resin from Boswellia serrata, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for various inflammatory conditions. In recent years, there has been emerging scientific interest in its potential for treating inflammatory skin diseases like psoriasis. Preclinical studies have shown that boswellic acids exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, primarily through inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β. These mechanisms are relevant to the pathogenesis of psoriasis, which is characterized by chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation. A few small-scale clinical studies and case reports have investigated the effects of Boswellia extracts on psoriasis. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2018 found that a topical formulation containing boswellic acids produced a modest improvement in psoriasis severity compared to placebo. However, the sample sizes were small and methodological quality varied. Most of the available evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal, with limited large-scale human data. In summary, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some preliminary clinical evidence supporting the use of boswellic acids for psoriasis, the overall clinical evidence is limited and not yet robust. Therefore, the use of boswellic acid for psoriasis is currently supported more by early-stage scientific findings than by strong clinical validation.
