Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Commiphora species, particularly Commiphora mukul (guggul), have a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, often for inflammatory and dermatological conditions, including psoriasis. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that guggul resin has been employed to address chronic skin diseases, based on its purported anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. However, robust scientific validation is lacking. Few clinical studies or controlled trials have specifically investigated Commiphora extracts for the treatment of psoriasis. Most available evidence consists of anecdotal or case reports, and some preliminary in vitro or animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects for Commiphora resins or their active components (such as guggulsterone). These findings, however, do not directly translate to proven efficacy or safety in human psoriasis patients. Major pharmacopoeias and dermatological guidelines do not recognize Commiphora as a standard treatment for psoriasis. Therefore, while the traditional use is documented, scientific support remains minimal, resulting in a low evidence rating.
