Emulsions, particularly in the form of topical creams and ointments, are scientifically validated as supportive therapies in the management of psoriasis. Psoriasis is characterized by dry, scaly, and inflamed skin, resulting in an impaired skin barrier. Emulsions, which are mixtures of oil and water stabilized by emulsifiers, serve as effective moisturizers (emollients) that help restore hydration, reduce transepidermal water loss, and enhance the skin barrier function. Numerous clinical guidelines, including those by the American Academy of Dermatology and the British Association of Dermatologists, recommend regular use of emollient emulsions in psoriasis care to soothe symptoms, reduce scaling, and improve the efficacy of other topical treatments by enhancing skin penetration. While emulsions themselves do not treat the underlying inflammation of psoriasis, their role in symptom management and skin barrier restoration is well established. Randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews consistently show that regular emollient use improves patient comfort, reduces itching, and can decrease the need for more potent topical medications. However, emulsion products are considered adjunctive rather than primary treatments. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting their use in psoriasis is moderate and primarily centers on symptom relief and supportive care rather than disease modification.
