Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Frankincense (Boswellia species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for a variety of inflammatory conditions. Its use for psoriasis is primarily rooted in this traditional context rather than robust modern scientific validation. The resin contains boswellic acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. In traditional systems, frankincense is often applied topically or used internally to help soothe skin irritation, reduce redness, and promote healing of chronic skin disorders, including psoriasis. However, while in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of boswellic acids, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating frankincense for psoriasis in humans. A handful of small studies and anecdotal reports suggest potential benefit, but these are insufficient to draw firm scientific conclusions. As a result, frankincense remains popular in complementary and alternative therapies for psoriasis, mainly due to its longstanding traditional use and plausible anti-inflammatory mechanism, rather than conclusive clinical evidence.
