Isoliquiritigenin is a flavonoid found primarily in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) and has attracted interest due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Scientific studies investigating its effects on psoriasis are limited but emerging. In preclinical models, particularly in vitro and in vivo (mouse) studies, isoliquiritigenin has demonstrated the ability to suppress key markers of inflammation such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17, which play significant roles in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Some studies have shown that isoliquiritigenin can inhibit keratinocyte proliferation and modulate immune responses by affecting the STAT3 signaling pathway and reducing neutrophil infiltration, both of which are relevant to psoriatic lesions. However, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence: no large-scale human trials have been published as of mid-2024 to confirm efficacy or safety in psoriasis patients.
The use of isoliquiritigenin for psoriasis is not rooted in traditional medicine; rather, its exploration is based on mechanistic and biochemical rationale identified through recent scientific research. As such, while there is scientific support from laboratory studies, clinical validation is lacking.
