Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Jojoba oil is sometimes used as an adjunctive topical treatment for psoriasis, primarily due to its moisturizing and skin-soothing properties. The oil is rich in wax esters structurally similar to human sebum, which helps restore the skin barrier and reduce dryness and scaling—common issues in psoriasis. There is limited direct scientific evidence supporting jojoba oil as a standalone treatment for psoriasis. However, a 2018 double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Mahrle et al., 1991) investigated a combination ointment containing jojoba oil and found it improved psoriatic lesions when used with other treatments. The study suggested jojoba oil's emollient effect enhances penetration of active ingredients and reduces scaling. Additionally, jojoba oil possesses mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as demonstrated in in vitro and animal studies, which may theoretically aid symptom relief. Despite these findings, the body of clinical research is small, and most recommendations for its use are based on its general safety profile and ability to improve skin hydration. Therefore, while jojoba oil may be helpful as a supportive measure in psoriasis management, it should not replace evidence-based medical therapies. More robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to conclusively establish its efficacy for this specific condition.
