Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a probiotic bacterium that has received some scientific attention for its potential role in modulating immune responses and supporting skin health, including in conditions like psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease characterized by inflammation and hyperproliferation of keratinocytes. Recent research has indicated that the gut-skin axis, or the relationship between gut microbiota and skin health, may be relevant in psoriasis pathogenesis.

A few animal studies and small-scale clinical trials have suggested that certain strains of L. plantarum can influence immune function by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines and reducing pro-inflammatory markers. For example, a 2021 randomized controlled trial found that a multi-strain probiotic supplement (including L. plantarum) improved the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores compared to placebo, possibly via modulation of systemic inflammation and the gut microbiota. However, these studies often used combinations of probiotics, making it difficult to isolate the specific effect of L. plantarum.
