Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus rhamnosus is a probiotic bacterium that has been researched for its effects on immune modulation and gut health. The rationale for its use in psoriasis centers around the emerging understanding of the gut-skin axis, where alterations in the gut microbiome may influence systemic inflammation and immune responses, both of which play key roles in psoriasis pathogenesis.

There is a small but growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that probiotics, including L. rhamnosus, may have a supportive role in managing psoriasis. For example, a 2018 randomized controlled trial found that a mixture containing L. rhamnosus administered for 12 weeks improved psoriasis severity and quality of life compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of inflammatory cytokines, reduction of systemic inflammation, and restoration of microbial balance.

However, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are lacking, and most evidence comes from small studies or animal models. The use of L. rhamnosus for psoriasis is not widely supported by clinical guidelines, and its efficacy remains uncertain. Therefore, the scientific evidence supporting L. rhamnosus for psoriasis is preliminary and warrants further investigation.
