Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Liverworts (Marchantiophyta) have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, mainly in Europe and Asia. The use of liverwort for skin conditions such as psoriasis stems from the "Doctrine of Signatures," an ancient belief that the appearance of a plant indicates its therapeutic use; liverwort’s lobed, liver-shaped leaves were thought to benefit liver and skin health. In various folk remedies, liverwort poultices or extracts have been topically applied to treat rashes, wounds, and other skin ailments, including psoriasis. However, there is little to no scientific evidence to validate these uses. Modern clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies specifically investigating liverwort for psoriasis are lacking. Some in vitro studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds in liverwort species, but their relevance to psoriasis treatment in humans remains unproven. As such, while liverwort’s use for psoriasis is rooted in tradition and historical herbal practice, its efficacy has not been substantiated by scientific research, and its use should be approached with caution.
