Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of the Orchid tree (commonly referring to species in the Bauhinia genus, such as Bauhinia variegata or Bauhinia purpurea) in the treatment of psoriasis is primarily justified by traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and some folk practices in South Asia. Historical records and ethnobotanical literature indicate that preparations from the bark, leaves, or flowers of the Orchid tree have been used topically or internally to address various skin disorders, including chronic skin diseases that may correlate with modern-day psoriasis. In Ayurveda, Bauhinia variegata is described as having "Kusthaghna" (anti-skin disease) properties, and is sometimes incorporated in polyherbal formulations aimed at alleviating symptoms such as scaling and inflammation.

However, scientific validation for the use of Orchid tree specifically in psoriasis is extremely limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Bauhinia species exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically be beneficial in psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition. However, to date, there are no robust clinical trials or direct studies in humans confirming efficacy or safety for this indication. Thus, while its use persists in traditional medicine, the overall evidence supporting its use for psoriasis remains weak and is not substantiated by high-quality scientific research.
