Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pomegranate oil has a history of use in traditional and folk medicine for various skin conditions, including psoriasis. It is rich in punicic acid (an omega-5 fatty acid) and antioxidants, which are thought to have anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties. However, the evidence for its use in psoriasis management comes mainly from anecdotal reports and traditional practices, particularly in Middle Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine, where pomegranate extracts and oils have been used to soothe skin irritations and promote healing. There is limited scientific research directly evaluating pomegranate oil's efficacy for psoriasis. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that pomegranate extracts can reduce inflammation and promote skin repair, but these studies typically use extracts or juice, not the oil specifically, and rarely focus on psoriasis as the primary condition. Human clinical trials are lacking, and no definitive studies have established pomegranate oil as an effective treatment for psoriasis. Therefore, while its use is rooted in traditional medicine, current scientific support is weak, and more robust clinical research is needed to validate its efficacy for psoriasis.
