Alstonia scholaris, commonly known as the devil tree, has been used in various traditional medicinal systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional medicine across South and Southeast Asia. Its bark, leaves, and latex are often employed for their purported anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itch) properties. In traditional practices, preparations of Alstonia scholaris have been applied topically or consumed to manage conditions like rashes, hives (urticaria), and other skin irritations. However, while the plant is cited in ethnobotanical literature for these uses, the scientific validation is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts from the plant possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, but direct evidence supporting efficacy specifically for rashes and hives in humans is lacking. There are no robust clinical trials or comprehensive pharmacological studies that conclusively demonstrate its benefit for these skin conditions. Therefore, while its use for rashes and hives is primarily justified by tradition, the supporting evidence is weak and largely anecdotal or preclinical.
