Evidence supporting the use of: Arisaema
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Arisaema, commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or by its various species-specific names (such as Arisaema triphyllum, Arisaema erubescens, etc.), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems. In TCM, preparations from Arisaema species (often processed to reduce toxicity) are traditionally used to treat "phlegm" conditions, cough, and certain skin ailments, including rashes and hives, though more commonly for swellings, sores, and ulcers. The tuber, after proper detoxification, is sometimes applied externally or used internally in formulas aimed at addressing skin eruptions, pruritus (itching), and inflammatory skin problems. However, these uses are primarily based on empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation. There is a lack of modern clinical or pharmacological studies specifically investigating Arisaema for the treatment of rashes or hives (urticaria). Furthermore, raw Arisaema is toxic and can cause skin irritation or even severe oral and gastrointestinal symptoms if not properly processed. Therefore, while its use for rashes and hives is documented in traditional sources, there is minimal to no scientific evidence supporting its efficacy or safety for this purpose. Caution is warranted, and use should be guided by experienced practitioners.
