Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee propolis, a resinous compound produced by honeybees, has been used traditionally for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. However, there is also a limited but growing body of scientific evidence supporting its potential efficacy for dermatological issues. Propolis contains flavonoids, phenolic acids, and other bioactive compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory effects. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that propolis can reduce skin inflammation and promote the healing of wounds and burns. Some small-scale human studies and case reports have also indicated that topical propolis preparations may help alleviate symptoms of eczema, dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Specifically for rashes and hives (urticaria), the evidence is sparse. While its anti-inflammatory properties may theoretically benefit skin inflammation, there are no large, high-quality clinical trials directly assessing the effectiveness of bee propolis for these conditions. Most clinical data are limited to allergic dermatitis and minor skin irritations. Moreover, there is a risk of allergic reaction to propolis itself, which could potentially exacerbate hives in sensitive individuals. As such, while the scientific rationale exists and preliminary findings are promising, the overall quality and quantity of evidence specifically for rashes and hives is low, meriting a score of 2 out of 5.
