Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clown's Mustard Plant (Cleome viscosa) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across India and Southeast Asia. For skin conditions such as rashes and hives, the leaves and seeds are sometimes applied topically as poultices or pastes. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys cite its use for soothing skin irritation, reducing inflammation, and as an antipruritic (anti-itch) agent. The rationale for its use is based on the plant's observed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in crude extracts, which traditional practitioners believe help alleviate symptoms of rashes and hives.

However, direct scientific studies evaluating Cleome viscosa for the treatment of rashes or hives (urticaria) in humans are very limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of the plant's extracts, which could theoretically support its use for minor skin irritations. Nevertheless, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials or robust preclinical evidence specifically targeting allergic skin reactions such as hives. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is limited and does not strongly substantiate its efficacy for these indications.
