Evidence supporting the use of: Cyperus (unspecified)
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cyperus species, particularly Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or "musta" in Ayurveda), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these systems, Cyperus is sometimes used for its purported anti-inflammatory, cooling, and detoxifying properties, which can relate to the management of skin conditions like rashes and hives. In Ayurveda, preparations of Cyperus are included in formulations for skin health and are thought to alleviate "pitta" imbalances, which are associated with inflammatory skin eruptions.
However, scientific evidence supporting the use of Cyperus for rashes and hives is extremely limited. While a few laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities in Cyperus extracts, these studies are mainly in vitro or animal-based and do not directly examine its efficacy for allergic skin conditions such as urticaria (hives) or nonspecific rashes. There are no robust clinical trials confirming its benefit for these indications. Therefore, the use of Cyperus for rashes and hives is primarily justified by traditional practice, with very weak or indirect scientific support.
