Evidence supporting the use of: Frankincense
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Frankincense, derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used topically and internally for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. In these traditions, frankincense was sometimes applied to the skin to help calm irritation, which could include rashes and hives. However, there is limited direct historical documentation specifically linking frankincense to the treatment of rashes and hives, as opposed to its broader use for general inflammation and skin health.
Scientifically, frankincense contains boswellic acids, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. Nevertheless, clinical studies directly evaluating frankincense for rashes and hives (such as urticaria or allergic reactions) in humans are lacking. Most modern research has focused on its use for arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that frankincense extracts can reduce skin inflammation, but these findings have not yet translated into robust clinical evidence for dermatological applications. Therefore, the use of frankincense for rashes and hives is supported more by traditional practices than by strong scientific validation.
