Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gardenia jasminoides (commonly known as gardenia or "Zhizi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long-standing use in traditional herbal medicine for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. In the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Gardenia jasminoides fruit is believed to "clear heat" and "eliminate dampness," which are thought to be underlying causes of dermatological symptoms such as redness, irritation, and eruptions on the skin. It is often included in multi-herb formulas prescribed for inflammatory skin conditions, including urticaria (hives) and various forms of dermatitis.

However, scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. Some preclinical studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in Gardenia jasminoides, such as geniposide and gardenoside. These compounds have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory and animal models, but direct evidence for efficacy in treating rashes or hives in humans is lacking. Clinical trials specifically evaluating Gardenia jasminoides for dermatological conditions are minimal to nonexistent. As such, while traditional use is well documented, modern scientific evidence remains insufficient to strongly support its effectiveness for rashes and hives. The overall evidence rating is therefore moderate (2/5), reflecting reliance on traditional use rather than robust clinical research.
