Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum), also known as everlasting, has a longstanding place in traditional herbal medicine for treating skin conditions such as rashes and hives. Folk remedies in Mediterranean regions have used Infusions, poultices, and essential oil of Immortelle to soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote healing of minor wounds and eruptions. The plant contains compounds such as flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, and phloroglucinols, which are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities.

There is limited scientific research directly assessing the effectiveness of Immortelle for rashes or hives specifically. Some in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that Helichrysum extracts have anti-inflammatory and skin-protective effects, but these studies do not focus on acute allergic reactions such as hives (urticaria) or common rashes. Most modern use for these skin issues is extrapolated from the plant's general anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties observed in laboratory settings and animal studies. Thus, while Immortelle’s use for rashes and hives is rooted in traditional herbal practice, robust clinical evidence for its efficacy in these specific conditions is lacking.
