Evidence supporting the use of: Lophira lanceolata
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lophira lanceolata, commonly known as "false shea" or "ironwood," is a plant traditionally used in West and Central African ethnomedicine. Its stem bark, leaves, and seeds are used in various remedies, including the topical treatment of skin conditions such as rashes and hives. Historical accounts and ethnobotanical surveys (e.g., Burkill, 1985; Adjanohoun et al., 1980) document the application of crushed leaves or bark extracts as poultices or washes to soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. However, there is minimal scientific research directly supporting the efficacy of Lophira lanceolata for dermatological conditions. Available studies primarily focus on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties (e.g., Atawodi et al., 2007; Oguche et al., 2010), which could provide a plausible rationale for its use against skin irritations, but these studies are preliminary and not specific to rashes or hives. In summary, the use of Lophira lanceolata for rashes and hives is supported mainly by traditional practices, with little direct clinical or pharmacological evidence to validate its effectiveness for these conditions.
