Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Loranthus, a genus of parasitic plants commonly known as mistletoe, has a history of use in various traditional medicine systems in Asia and Africa. In folk medicine, species such as Loranthus ferrugineus and Loranthus micranthus have been utilized for their purported anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and wound healing properties. Traditional healers have sometimes recommended topical or internal preparations of Loranthus extracts for various skin complaints, including rashes and hives (urticaria), likely due to the plant’s perceived ability to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. A few studies have investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory constituents of Loranthus species, but there is a lack of direct clinical or robust preclinical evidence specifically evaluating their efficacy for rashes or hives in humans or animal models. The evidence thus remains primarily anecdotal and rooted in traditional practice. Therefore, while Loranthus is used in some traditional medicine systems for skin conditions like rashes and hives, there is not enough scientific support to recommend its use for these conditions with confidence.
