For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii, also known as monk fruit) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its cooling properties and is most well-known as a natural sweetener and remedy for sore throat, cough, and lung-related ailments. In some TCM texts and folk practices, Luo Han Guo has been used for “heat” conditions, which may occasionally be linked to skin eruptions such as rashes or hives (urticaria), based on the traditional theory that skin outbreaks can be caused by internal “heat” or “toxicity.” However, these traditions are not well-documented in major classical materia medica, and Luo Han Guo is not a primary herb for dermatological conditions in TCM. There is no robust tradition or standardized indication for Luo Han Guo as a treatment for rashes or hives, and it is rarely, if ever, used as a main ingredient for these concerns. Furthermore, there is no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for skin rashes or hives, and no clinical studies address this use. Its modern use is almost entirely focused on respiratory and metabolic conditions. In summary, Luo Han Guo’s use for rashes or hives is limited to marginal traditional references with minimal evidence, and it is not supported by scientific research.
