Evidence supporting the use of: Nettle
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for managing various skin conditions, including rashes and hives (urticaria). In European and Western herbal traditions, nettle leaves have been applied topically or consumed as teas and extracts to help relieve itching, redness, and swelling associated with skin eruptions. This use is likely rooted in nettle's anti-inflammatory and antihistamine-like properties, as observed in folk remedies.
Scientific evidence supporting nettle's efficacy for rashes and hives is limited but promising. Some laboratory studies have shown that nettle extracts can inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells, which is a key mechanism in allergic reactions such as hives. Additionally, small human studies suggest that oral nettle preparations may help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis, a condition characterized by histamine-mediated symptoms. However, direct clinical research on nettle for skin rashes or hives is scarce, and most available data are either anecdotal or extrapolated from studies on allergies in general.
While traditional use is well documented and some preclinical evidence lends plausibility, nettle's use for rashes and hives is not yet strongly validated by large, high-quality clinical trials. Individuals interested in using nettle for this purpose should consult healthcare professionals, especially since skin reactions can sometimes indicate serious underlying conditions.
