Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), is primarily used in traditional medicine, especially within Chinese herbal medicine systems. It has been employed for its purported "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, and is often included in formulas intended to address skin conditions such as rashes and hives (urticaria). Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts mention its use for various inflammatory and infectious conditions, including skin eruptions, boils, and other dermal complaints that are believed to be related to "toxic heat" or systemic inflammation.

However, modern scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Oldenlandia for rashes and hives is very limited. Most published research on Oldenlandia focuses on its potential anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects, with only a few in vitro or animal studies addressing generalized anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory activities. There is a lack of high-quality, peer-reviewed clinical trials specifically evaluating its effects on rashes or hives in humans. Therefore, while its use for these conditions is well-established within the context of traditional herbal practice, scientific validation remains weak, and its efficacy and safety for these specific dermatological indications are not firmly established by modern research.
