Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Orchid trees, generally referring to species within the Bauhinia genus (such as Bauhinia variegata and Bauhinia purpurea), have a long-standing presence in traditional medicine systems, especially Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. In these traditions, extracts from various parts of the plant—bark, leaves, and flowers—have been used for a range of ailments, including skin conditions like rashes and hives. Topical applications or decoctions were sometimes employed to soothe skin irritation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. However, the documentation is primarily based on ethnobotanical records and traditional texts, rather than controlled clinical studies. Scientific validation for these uses is lacking: there are very limited modern studies examining the efficacy of Bauhinia species for dermatological conditions. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Bauhinia extracts, which could, in theory, support the traditional use for skin inflammation. However, none of these studies directly address rashes or hives in human subjects. Thus, while the rationale for use is rooted in tradition and historical practice, robust scientific evidence is absent, resulting in a low evidence rating.
