Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ornamental Jewelweed (Impatiens balsamina and related species such as Impatiens capensis) has a long history of traditional use among various indigenous peoples and herbalists for the treatment of skin irritations, including rashes and hives. This use is particularly well-documented for North American jewelweed species, which are commonly applied as poultices or washes for poison ivy dermatitis and other minor skin inflammations. The rationale is partly based on folklore and the observation that jewelweed often grows in the same habitats as poison ivy.

Scientific validation for the efficacy of jewelweed against rashes and hives is limited and somewhat conflicting. Some laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of jewelweed may possess anti-inflammatory and antipruritic (anti-itch) properties, possibly due to compounds such as lawsone or saponins. However, clinical trials in humans are scarce and have generally failed to consistently demonstrate a significant benefit over placebo, especially for poison ivy dermatitis. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-established, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness remains limited, resulting in a low-to-moderate evidence rating.
