Evidence supporting the use of: Paeonia moutan
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Paeonia moutan, commonly known as moutan peony or tree peony, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, the root bark of Paeonia moutan (known as Mu Dan Pi) is considered to "clear heat" and "cool the blood," properties that are traditionally associated with the treatment of dermatological conditions such as rashes, urticaria (hives), and other inflammatory skin disorders. Classical texts and herbal compendiums describe its use to alleviate symptoms of redness, itching, and swelling caused by "heat" in the blood.
Scientific research into the specific effects of Paeonia moutan on rashes and hives is limited. Some pharmacological studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of its constituents, such as paeonol and paeonoside. These compounds have been shown in vitro and in animal models to inhibit the release of histamines and pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are relevant to the pathophysiology of hives and allergic skin reactions. However, clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient direct scientific evidence to confirm its efficacy for these particular conditions.
In summary, the use of Paeonia moutan for rashes and hives is primarily justified by traditional use, with modest supportive evidence from basic pharmacological studies but no robust clinical validation to date.
