For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, including Chinese and Korean herbal practices. Traditionally, different parts of the plant—especially the leaves and bark—have been used to address various skin ailments such as rashes, hives (urticaria), and other inflammatory skin conditions. The rationale for its use in these traditions is generally based on the plant's reputed "heat-clearing" and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical texts and pharmacopeias mention its topical and sometimes internal use to "cool the blood" and reduce skin irritation.
From a modern scientific perspective, there is limited evidence to validate these traditional uses specifically for rashes and hives. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in paper mulberry, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which may theoretically contribute to skin-soothing effects. However, there are very few clinical studies, and none directly evaluating its efficacy for rashes or hives in humans. The evidence supporting its use is therefore primarily traditional, with only preliminary pharmacological data providing indirect support. More rigorous clinical research is needed before paper mulberry can be recommended with confidence for these skin conditions.
