Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Premna, particularly species like Premna serratifolia (known as Arani or Agnimantha in Ayurveda), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine across South and Southeast Asia. In these traditions, Premna leaves, bark, and roots are commonly used for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and detoxifying properties. Specifically, decoctions or pastes made from Premna are applied topically or taken internally to address various skin ailments, including rashes, hives, eczema, and boils. The rationale in traditional texts often links these uses to the plant's supposed ability to “cool” the body, purify the blood, and counteract “heat” or inflammation-related disorders. Despite this rich traditional context, there is limited scientific research directly validating Premna’s efficacy for rashes and hives. Some pharmacological studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in Premna species, which could theoretically contribute to skin-calming effects. However, clinical studies targeting dermatological conditions like urticaria (hives) are lacking. Therefore, while Premna’s use for rashes and hives is well established in tradition (evidence rating 2), robust scientific validation is currently insufficient. More research is needed to clarify its specific mechanisms and effectiveness for these conditions.
